Standard features of Windows Server 2022:

Secure Core Server

Powerful threat protection combined to provide multilevel security on hardware, firmware, and operating system. It uses Trusted Platform Module 2.0 and System Guard to securely boot Windows Server and minimize risks from firmware vulnerabilities. Secured-core server also includes virtualization-based security (VBS) features such as Credential Guard and hypervisor protected code integrity (HVCI).

Credential Guard

Preventive defense for sensitive resources such as credentials and HVCI applies hardware-based security to prevent advanced malware from tampering with the system. Secure connectivity adds an additional layer of security during transport for advanced protection. Windows Server 2022 enhances connection security with the faster and more secure encrypted Transport Layer Security (HTTPS) 1.3 protocol and Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 enabled by default. Customers can also further protect server communications with industry-standard AES-256 encryption, which now supports the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol and improved controls.

Hybrid capabilities with Azure

We are introducing new features that enable customers to leverage cloud innovation with their on-premise investments. Azure Arc and the Storage Migration service are two key hybrid capabilities that work best with Windows Server 2022.

Azure Arc allows customers to manage, protect and govern Windows Server on-premises, at the edge or in multi-cloud environments from a single control panel in Azure. Through Azure Arc, customers can easily use Azure management features such as Azure Policies, Azure Monitoring and Azure Defender for such servers. In addition, with a few simple clicks in Windows Admin Center, connectivity to Azure Arc can be enabled. In addition, we have enhanced Windows Admin Center v2103 with greatly improved virtual machine management, a simpler event viewer, and many other updates. Windows Admin Center is also available in the Azure portal.

Windows Server 2022 Standard

improves the seamless connectivity of local file servers to file servers in Azure. Upgrades to the storage migration service allow customers to migrate file servers from certain network access storage (NAS) systems and Windows file servers to Windows servers on Azure. Using the storage migration service to migrate data to servers allows customers to maintain low latency while reducing the local storage footprint.

Flexible application platform

Customers use Windows Server to run large-scale, distributed applications. As a result, we have focused relentlessly on offering platform features and tools that improve developer speed and support for business-critical workloads such as SQL Server. In this release we are adding several platform enhancements for Windows containers, including application compatibility and the Windows container experience with Kubernetes. One major improvement includes reducing the size of the Windows container image, which results in faster download times and better performance. In addition, you can now run applications that depend on Azure Active Directory with group managed services accounts (gMSAs) without the domain joining the container host. In addition, there are several other enhancements that simplify the Windows container experience with Kubernetes. These enhancements include container host process support for node configuration, IPv6, and consistent network policy implementation with Calico.
In addition to platform enhancements, there is an updated Windows Admin Center tool that simplifies the containerization of .NET applications. Once the application is in a container, it can be hosted in the Azure Container Registry for later deployment to other Azure services, including the Azure Kubernetes service.
Windows Server 2022 supports business-critical and large-scale applications such as SQL Server that require 48 TB of memory and 2,048 logical cores running on 64 physical sockets.
