How to Activate Windows Server 2025 (Standard and Datacenter)

Step-by-step guide in Italian: entering the product key and, if necessary, phone activation with a confirmation ID via the official Microsoft portal.

Before You Begin

  • Verify that the system not whether it's a version Evaluation (test) or convert it as explained in step 1.
  • Install the pending updates and restart the server.
  • Check that the key matches the installed edition (Standard o Data Center).
  • Keep the key you received via email (25 characters) handy.

⚠️ Important

Follow the steps in the order listed, without skipping any. This key is usually activated by phone (Steps 5–8): It is normal for the online activation to display an error.

Check which version is installed

Open PowerShell or the Command Prompt as an administrator (right-click → Run as administrator) and type:

DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
DISM /Online /Get-TargetEditions

If the current edition contains Eval, convert it using your key (replace the Xs with the key you received):

DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula

For Data Centers, use Server Data Center instead of Standard Server. Choose only one edition from the list of Get-TargetEditions, then restart and double-check with DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition.

Open the activation settings

Go to Start → Settings → System → Activation.

Enter the product key

Click on Change Product Key, confirm the administrator request and type the 25-character key. Alternatively, from the Command Prompt as an administrator:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

If you've just upgraded the edition, you may need to restart again.

Check the status

Type slmgr /xpr in an administrator command prompt. If online activation fails (for example, with the error 0xC004C008) Don't worry: that's expected. Continue with the’phone activation.

Start the phone activation

Awards Windows + R, type slui 4 and awards OK.

In the most recent versions, you may see the option Activate via the Product Activation Portal (automatic assistance): That's fine anyway.

Copy the installation ID

Select Italy as a country and write it down (or copy it) all groups of numbers of the’Installation ID, in the exact order in which they appear.

Get your confirmation ID (free)

Use the official Microsoft portal: visualsupport.microsoft.com

  • Sign in with a Microsoft account.
  • Choose to Activate a Microsoft product, then Windows and the entry closest to Windows Server 2025.
  • Enter the full installation ID.
  • When asked how many computers have already used this copy, answer 0 (new activation).

Alternatively, you can call the toll-free number shown in the window slui 4 and enter the ID into the automated system.

Enter the confirmation ID

Return to the phone activation window, and enter each group of the’Confirmation ID in the corresponding box (A, B, C…) and click Activate Windows.

Check if it's activated

Reopen Settings → System → Activation or log in as an administrator:

slmgr /xpr

You should see a message stating that the computer is permanently activated. ✅

Common Problems

  • Error 0x80070032 when entering the key? The server is running version Evaluation: Convert the edition using the DISM command from Step 1, then restart.
  • Does “Eval” show up again? Repeat step 1: DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition It should no longer display "Eval.".
  • Invalid key? Verify that the installed edition (Standard/Datacenter) matches the product key.
  • Persistent error? Complete the updates, restart, and try again. With slmgr /dlv View the license details and the error code.
  • Confirmation ID rejected? Double-check the order of the groups for the installation ID and confirmation ID before requesting a new one.
